Indian FM leaves for visit to Maldives

Xinhua, October 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj is leaving for a two-day visit to Maldives on Saturday.

The Indian Foreign Ministry said Swaraj will jointly chair with her Maldivian counterpart Dunya Mamoon a meeting of the India- Maldives Joint Commission that will focus on ties in such areas as energy, health, trade and defense.

"We expect the talks to give directions for enhancing trade and investment, meet developmental objectives in Maldives, discuss further cooperation in areas such as healthcare, energy collaboration and human resource development," ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said.

The Indian minister will also meet President Abdullah Yameen during her visit to the Indian Ocean nation. "While in Male, she will also call on President Yameen and she will hold talks with Ministers of defense, economic development and health," the spokesperson said.

On a reported assassination attempt on the Maldivian president, Swarup said: "We were very concerned when we heard about it. We immediately offered treatment facility in India and sent a three- member forensic team to conduct an audit of boat to determine the cause of the explosion."

An explosion took place on a speed boat carrying Maldivian President Yameen, his wife and other presidential staff as it was approaching the main jetty in the capital of Male on Sept. 28. The president escaped unhurt, but the first lady and two other security officials suffered serious injuries. Endi
