Latvian customs chief suspended over compliance with EU regulation

Xinhua, October 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Talis Kravalis has been suspended as director of the Customs Board of the Latvian Revenue Service and is facing a disciplinary probe, Latvian public television reported Friday.

Revenue Service director-general Inara Petersone said on public television that she had ordered a probe to examine whether the EU regulation on the customs transit procedure had been properly carried out in Latvia.

The probe is also expected to look into Kravalis' recent remarks in the media which in Petersone's words had not "polished the Revenue Service's image."

Petersone said at a press briefing on Friday that the question causing the greatest uncertainty was whether the transit procedure had to be started before or after loading the cargo. In line with EU regulation, the procedure has to be started when the cargo has already been loaded.

The ad hoc commission tasked with probing the issue has 30 days to come up with its conclusions about the Latvian customs chief's conduct. Endit
