China to propose seabed area names

Xinhua, October 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

The State Oceanic Administration (SOA) on Friday announced 124 names of newly surveyed seabed areas, which are to be submitted in groups for official recognition.

Of the areas, 101 are located in the Pacific Ocean, 15 in the Indian Ocean and eight in the Atlantic Ocean.

The names -- mostly taken from "the Book of Songs," also known as the "Book of Odes," a collection of Chinese poetry and songs dating back more than 2,000 years -- will be submitted to a sub-committee of the international oceanographic commission and the international hydrographic organization on undersea feature names.

Shi Qingfeng, spokesperson for the SOA, said that the areas were defined by China's oceanic surveys which are reliable and standard, and will help with map-making and oceanic development.

As of 2014, the SCUFN had approved 3,820 proposals on seabed area names, including 43 from China.

A Chinese delegation will attend the 28th SCUFN meeting in Brazil in October. Endi
