Australian PM makes New Zealand first overseas visit

Xinhua, October 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will make his first official visit to New Zealand next week, barely a month after taking up the post, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said in a statement Friday.

Turnbull and a delegation would arrive in Auckland on Friday ahead of his bilateral meeting with Key on Saturday.

"I am delighted to host Prime Minister Turnbull in his first overseas visit as the new Prime Minister of Australia," said Key.

He expected to discuss a range of political, economic, social and security issues of mutual interest with Turnbull.

"Discussions will also include my concerns about New Zealanders being deported from Australia, advancing our single economic market and cooperation on global political and security issues," said Key.

"Australia is New Zealand's closest bilateral partner and we look forward to continuing the tradition of close contact between trans-Tasman Prime Ministers."

About 300 New Zealanders are reportedly being held in Australian detention centers or have been deported since strict new visa laws to deport convicted criminals were introduced last year. Endi
