Iceland sees increase of foreign visitor overnight stays in August

Iceland saw a year-on-year increase of 19 percent in the number of foreigners who stayed overnight in hotels in August, official figures showed on Wednesday.

According to statistics issued by Statistics Iceland, the number of people who paid for accommodations in Icelandic hotels rose to 336,700 in August, a 17 percent increase compared with August 2014.

Meanwhile, foreign tourists accounted for 92 percent of the people who stayed in Icelandic hotels in August, up 19 percent compared with the figure in August 2014. The number of Icelandic citizens staying overnight in hotels increased 2 percent over the same period.

Foreigners who stayed overnight in Iceland in August were mostly residents from the United States, Germany and Britain.

In the last 12 months, from September 2014 until August 2015, overnight stays in hotels were 2,605,003 which is an increase of around 18 percent compared with the same period of the previous year. Enditem
