Chinese women all out, Djokovic and Nadal advance at China Open

Wang Qiang, the last Chinese woman at the China Open tennis tournament, lost to former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki 7-5, 6-0 on Tuesday, while men's title contenders Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal recorded comfortable wins.

Before Wang's exit, Chinese Han Xinyun, Zhang Shuai and Zheng Saisai had already crashed out in the first round.

This was Wang's second main draw appearance in Beijing since 2012. She beat left-handed Varvara Lepchenko in the first round for her third career win over top 100 players.

Wang and Wozniacki, ranked 11th, had met once in Kuala Lumpur in 2013, where Wang managed a 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-1 victory. That was also her only win over world top 20 player.

Both players shared breaks in the first seven games, and then Wang secured her serve game to build a 5-3 lead in the first set.

Things began to change since the eighth game as Wang committed more mistakes. Wozniacki produced a four-game winning streak, grabbing the first set 7-5.

Wozniacki continued her momentum in the second set, allowing not a single game to the host player and winning the match in 79 minutes.

"The first set loss, especially after I had the advantage once, affected my confidence and morale for later games," said Wang. "She played very well, and gave me a lot of pressure throughout the match."

Facing qualifier Simone Bolelli, world No. 1 Djokovic dominated the game and sealed it 6-1, 6-1 in just 71 minutes. His opponent in the second round will be China's Zhang Ze, who upset Denis Istomin on Monday.

After the singles victory, top-seeded Djokovic appeared on doubles' court with his younger brother Djordje Djokovic, beating China-New Zealand duo Gong Maoxin and Michael Venus 7-6 (5), 6-7 (6), 10-5.

In the first encounter between Nadal and Wu Di, who once acted as the Spanish star's ball boy in his childhood, the Chinese wild card kept his serves in the first game, but the third seed took advantage in the baseline to claim the next two games. After Nadal maintained her serve game in the tenth, he won the first set 6-4.

Nadal had a 1-0 lead in the second set, before the host player jumped to 4-2 ahead thanks to a strong baseline performance.

"It looks like the match was under control with 6-4, 1-0, but then situation changed. I played little bit too much far away from the baseline," said Nadal.

The 14-time Grand Slam winner was then fired up, taking four straight games to wrap up the victory.

Venus Williams, titleholder of WTA Wuhan Open last Saturday, was upset by Ana Ivanovic 6-7 (3), 2-6. US Open champion Flavia Pennetta and 10th-seeded Angelique Kerber also advanced to last 16. Endi
