Guatemala landslide death toll rises to 48

Xinhua, October 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

The death toll from a landslide that hit a Guatemalan village on Thursday evening has risen to 48, while 350 people were missing, Guatemala's National Disaster Mitigation Coordination said on Saturday.

"Only 20 victims have been identified while the other 28 are not recognized yet," said Julia Barrera, spokesman for the country's Public Ministry.

Search operations were suspended on Friday at 20:00 local time (0200 GMT Saturday) for safety and lack of visibility.

Rescue work was resumed on Saturday as Red Cross rescue workers, firefighters and police with dogs continued to search for possible survivors in an area where some 125 homes were buried.

The landslide occurred on Thursday night following heavy rains in the village of El Cambray II, near the town of Santa Catarina Pinula, 15 km south of Guatemala City. Enditem
