Mainz beat Darmstadt 3-2 despite giving away a two-goal lead at the opener of the 8th round in Bundesliga on Friday.

Bundesliga newcomers Darmstadt staged a resilient performance against Mainz but were unable to secure a draw as Sandro Wagner failed to convert a foul play penalty in the final seconds of the game.

Mainz caught a bright start on the road as they broke the deadlock with 15 minutes into the game after Danny Latza's free kick into the box found Stefan Bell, who nodded home into the far post corner.

Newly promoted Darmstadt remained shocked while Mainz kept it bowling to double the lead through Yunus Malli, whose well placed effort beat Darmstadt goalkeeper Christian Mathenia into the top left corner nine minutes after the opener.

However, Darmstadt responded out of the blue at the 27th minute when Marcel Heller reduced the arrears with a turn shot into the top right. After the restart the hosts shocked Mainz with the two all draw as Marco Sailer volleyed home Konstantin Rausch's pinpoint cross to the far post at the 57th minute.

It was a short lived joy for the hosts as Mainz bounced back with the 3-2 lead through Pablo De Blasis, who made use of a rebound from very close range seven minutes later.

The game wasn't over yet as referee Florian Meyer awarded Darmstadt a foul play penalty, after Gonzalo Jara brought down Luca Caldirola inside the box, in the dying seconds of the game.

Darmstadt's Sandro Wagner stepped up and pulled the penalty over the bar to leave his side empty handed despite a courageous performance.

With the result, Mainz jump on the 5th place for the moment meanwhile Darmstadt slip to the 10th place after suffering the second loss of the season.

The following fixtures are scheduled for Saturday: Monchengladbach face Wolfsburg, Hannover host Werder Bremen, Hertha Berlin see Hamburg, Hoffenheim clash with Stuttgart and newly promoted Ingolstadt encounter Eintracht Frankfurt. Endit
