Indonesia speaks highly of major UN success stories

Xinhua, October 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Indonesia on Friday spoke highly of two major UN success stories -- the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals and peacekeeping operations, saying that these achievements are conducive to realizing the ideals of the UN Charter.

Muhammad Kalla, the vice president of Indonesia, made the statement as he was addressing the annual high-level debate of the UN General Assembly, which entered its fifth day here Friday.

"The 70th anniversary of the UN has been signified by the adoption of the Post-2015 Development Goals," he said, referring to the fact that this year marks the 70th birthday of the world body.

The Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by world leaders here a week ago, are a set of 17 targets and serve as a blueprint for the global sustainable development efforts for the next 15 years.

"The UN's 70th anniversary is a good momentum to look back and reflect on the UN's progress in realizing the ideals of its Charter," Kalla said.

Another success story of the United Nations is its peacekeeping operations, the vice president said.

The UN peacekeeping operations have "contributed to maintaining peace and security" in the world, he said.

"Indeed, the UN has been relatively successful in preventing and overcoming major global armed conflicts in the past 70 years," he said.

Currently, more than 100 thousand personnel are involved in 16 ongoing UN peacekeeping operations worldwide, he noted, adding that Indonesia is proud to be the 11th largest contributor to the UN peacekeeping operations. Enditem
