IS affiliates attack Libyan largest oil port

Xinhua, October 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Islamic State (IS) militants launched attacks on Sidra oil-port in eastern Libya, killing one army soldier and injuring two, a military source said on Friday.

"The army guarding the gate engaged with the militants and killed four, among them some African nationals, before the militants attempted to detonate a truck bomb," Ali al-Hasi, spokesman for the oil facilities guards said.

Sidra is Libya's largest oil port, which was shut down in December 2014 due to armed clashes near the facilities.

Libyan oil fields have been targeted by IS militants. In March, Al-Ghani oilfield came under IS attack, during which nine foreign workers were kidnapped.

IS affiliates have controlled the city of Sirte, some 450 km east the capital Tripoli, as well as the city of Derna. The militants group recently escalated their attacks against government and army sites in the country.

Libya has been suffering a security vacuum and a state of anarchy since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011. The country is plagued with escalating violence and similar attacks. Endit
