Brazilian lower house speaker's secret Swiss accounts frozen: authorities

Xinhua, October 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

The speaker of Brazil's lower house of Congress has four secret accounts in Swiss banks, and they have been frozen by Swiss authorities, Brazilian prosecutors announced late Wednesday.

Those accounts, owned by Eduardo Cunha, his wife and one of their daughters, were not declared to Brazil's Federal Revenues Secretariat, Brazilian prosecutors said after being informed of the findings by their Swiss counterparts.

Cunha has refused to comment on the Swiss authorities' findings. In response to those who asked him about the matter, he said his lawyer would deal with the accusations.

Cunha's lawyer, Antonio Fernando de Souza, said he was so far unaware of any Swiss investigations against his client.

The Swiss prosecutors started investigating Cunha for money laundering and corruption charges against him in April, before they turned over evidence to their Brazilian counterparts, as Cunha, a Brazilian citizen, could not be deported to Switzerland to answer for the charges.

Brazilian authorities will use the evidence to investigate Cunha, who was faced with accusations by five people involved in a corruption scheme at state oil giant Petrobras. Endi
