EU deploys election observation mission to Myanmar

Xinhua, October 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Union (EU) is deploying a mission to Myanmar to observe the country's upcoming general election scheduled for November 8, an official report said on Thursday.

According to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the Myanmar Union Election Commission (UEC), the EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) comprises 101 experts and is led by Chief Observer Alexandar Graf Lambsdorff, a vice president of the Union Parliament.

The core team of election experts has arrived in Myanmar and will be joined by 30 long-term observers on next Wednesday and 62 short-term observers on Nov. 2.

The UEC allows the EU mission to observe every stage of the electoral process including advance voting in all regions and states of the country.

The deployment of EU EOM is said to be part of EU's support to the country's democratic transition process.

The EU EOM comprises observers from many of the member states of the European Union in addition to observers from Canada, Switzerland and Norway and diplomats from embassies of EU countries accredited to Myanmar.

The EU EOM will issue a preliminary statement shortly after the election day and a final report with recommendations at a later stage, according to the mission.

According to Myanmar's UEC, a total of 6,074 candidates including 310 independents will run the upcoming general election.

Of the total, 5,764 candidates are nominated from 91 political parties.

The commission designated 1,163 constituencies for the vote at four levels of the parliament across the country. Endi
