Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday called on the international community and the Middle East to work together to build a Middle East that is "peaceful, tolerant and self-reliant."

At a Security Council meeting on the settlement of conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa and countering the terrorist threat in the region, Wang said that the Middle East is facing a worrisome situation. National differences, sectarian strife, and ethnic conflicts are interconnected; conflicts, humanitarian disasters and terrorist threats are intertwined.

"We should reflect on the root causes of the chaos in the Middle East, assess and predict the regional situation in a fair and objective manner, try to find an effective solution and strive to form a framework for peace agreed by all parties," he said.

China has always firmly supported the restoration of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people as soon as possible to achieve peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel, he said, adding that The international community should make concerted efforts to initiate dialogues between the two sides on a broad-based platform that allows the direct participation of main parties. Only through dialogue can peace be achieved and future assured.

On Syria, Wang said that with the rise of violence and terrorism and the escalation of refugees crisis, all parties are now more aware of the urgent need to find a political solution to this issue.

"China calls on all parties to seize the opportunity of rising political will to consider convening the third Geneva conference on Syria and promote an inclusive process of political transition involving all parties, without setting preconditions or prejudging the results," he said. "With the help of the international community and the support of the Security Council, the Syrian people can determine their country's future."

On terrorism, Wang said that terrorism is the common enemy of mankind. China advocates extensive and comprehensive international counter-terrorism cooperation within the UN framework, with the following key areas: fight against cyber-terrorism; prevention of violent extremist ideology; cutting off terrorist funding channels; blocking terrorist mobility; strengthening the exchange of information on terrorism ; giving full play to the role of the Security Council.

Stressing that "people need a Middle East that is peaceful, tolerant and self-reliant," Wang said that "regional order should be based on the UN Charter. The countries of the region should take the lead in defining regional order, which should be in line with local reality and the needs of the local people."

"China hopes that this meeting can become a new starting point for the renewed efforts made by the international community and a new chapter of peace and security in the Middle East," he said. Enditem
