Mideast cargo traffic tops global growth in August

Xinhua, September 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Air freight demand in August in the Middle East surged over 10 percent year on year while all other regions posted either a decline or a stagnation in cargo traffic, International Air Transport Association (IATA) said on Wednesday.

In its monthly report on air freight movements around the globe, IATA said Middle East carriers recorded the strongest growth with demand expanding by 10.4 percent while capacity rose 14.3 percent.

"Although some economies in the region have suffered a slowdown in non-oil growth, overall expansion remains robust enough to sustain solid growth in air freight," stated the report.

This regional trend stood in stark contrast to global developments Measured in Freight Tonne Kilometers, air cargo volumes rose 0.2 percent year on year worldwide compared to the same month a year ago.

"This is a modest improvement on July performance when freight demand contracted by 0.6 percent year on year," said IATA.

The Middle East was followed by African (up 2.3 percent) and European airlines (0.7 percent higher). The most significant negative impact on the global performance was by Latin America (7.3 percent lower).

All regions reported capacity expansions ahead of growth in demand. Asia-Pacific based airlines posted a 1.0 percent decline while North America fell by 3.3 percent in relation to transported air cargo. Endit
