Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) government has hailed the sentencing by a Germany court of Straton Musoni and Ignace Murwanashyaka, two Rwandese rebel leaders who were accused of masterminding massacres in eastern DR Congo from their homes in Germany.
Murwanashyaka, who is the leader of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), was given a 13-year sentence, while Musoni, his deputy, was sentenced to eight years.
"The sentencing in Germany constitutes a major step in the fight against impunity which has been the cause of the continued existence of rebel forces in the Great Lakes region," a statement signed by government spokesman Lambert Mende said.
He said other countries hosting FDLR rebels should emulate the example set by Germany of prosecuting those who commit crimes in the east of the country.
Mende used the statement to urge remaining FDLR fighters who are still active in the east of the country to surrender and return to Rwanda. Enditem
