1st LD Writethru: India sentences 5 to death in 2006 Mumbai serial train blasts

Xinhua, September 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

An Indian special court Wednesday sentenced five men to death and seven others to life in jail in the 2006 Mumbai serial train blasts case.

The anti-terror court earlier this month convicted the 12 men for their role in the blasts on Mumbai's local trains in July 2006, in which nearly 190 people were killed and over 800 injured.

Though the prosecution had asked for the death sentence for eight of the 12 convicts, calling them "merchants of death", the court sent only five to gallows and seven to serve life term.

Seven blasts had rocked the first-class compartments of Mumbai' s local trains in a span of just 10 minutes during rush hour on the evening of July 11, 2006.

A total of 13 men were arrested on various charges, including transporting, planting the bombs in pressure cookers and placing them inside coaches. However, one person was acquitted.

Police say 15 more accused in the case, including the masterminds of the terror plot, are still absconding and claim the involvement of banned Pakistani terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba. Endi
