Defending Russian Premier League champions Zenit St. Petersburg have taken control of Group H of the UEFA Champions League with a 2-1 home win over Belgian side Gent Tuesday evening.

After enjoying a 1-0 half-time lead thanks to striker Artyom Dzyuba, Zenit conceded a Thomas Matton equaliser on the hour before a 67th-minute goal from midfielder Oleg Shatov broke the deadlock between the two sides, much to the delight of the home crowd at St. Petersburg's Petrovsky Stadium.

After a sluggish start to the Russian Premier League season, Zenit have enjoyed a perfect start to the Champions League, with two wins from their first two games.

With a maximum 6 points, the Russian side now enjoy a three-point lead at the top of Group H ahead of Valencia (3), Gent (1) and Olympique Lyonnais (1). Endit
