Philippines avenge 2013 loss, beating Iran 87-73

The 2013 runners-up the Philippines beat Iran 87-73 in a rematch of 2013 final at 2015 Asian Championship of men's basketball here on Monday.

The defending champions opened gunfire with Mahdi Kamrani's three-pointer before former NBA player Andray Blatche had two free-throws for the Philippines. Iran led the first quarter 25-22.

Sajjad Mashayekhi had two layups followed by Hamed Ehadadi's dunk at the beginning of the second period. Then they had another 7-0 streak with Khahbahrami hitting two three-pointers plus a free throw by Ehadadi. The Iranians were 43-37 up before the halftime break.

Iran once led by 10 points before the Philippines managed to storm two 9-0 streaks in the third quarter. Terrence Romeo had eight straight points in the second run to put the Philippines 65-60 ahead.

The Iranians lost patience as the Philippines gradually extended their advantage.

The Philippines strengthened their attack in the paint after Hamed Ehadadi was sent off following his fifth foul. Having eight steals this quarter, they once led by 16 points and finished the match 87-73.

Jayson William had a match high 28 points with Blatche contributing 18 points and seven rebounds, during Iran's first loss in Changsha.
