3 police, 85 IS fighters killed in eastern Afghan clashes

Xinhua, September 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

Three police personnel and 85 Islamic State (IS) fighters were killed following clashes in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangarhar on Sunday.

The IS fighters, which is also known as Daesh, attacked several security checkpoints in Achin district of Nangarhar in early hours of Sunday.

"Three Afghan Border Police were killed and eight police wounded while 85 IS militants were also killed following the fierce clashes and the ensuing airstrikes in the district near the border with Pakistan," a provincial security source told Xinhua anonymously.

The IS fighters, largely foreign militants, captured two security check posts after the clashes but police recaptured them after heavy fighting later on Sunday, the source added.

This is the first time that IS fighters engaged with Afghan security forces since they made gains in the province.

The IS, according to media reports, has also declared war against Taliban militants in Afghanistan. Endi
