Experts warn of growing piracy in LatAm

Piracy could grow in Latin America, particularly against the background that the expansion of the Panama Canal will be completed in 2016, warned experts on Friday.
Unlike the situation in Africa, where attacks are against larger cargo vessels, piracy in Latin America has mostly been against fishing boats and yachts to steal money, cargo or valuable equipment aboard, Manuel Aguirre, an expert in maritime security, told an international conference.
Luciano Campoli, head of G7 International or an Italian company that organized the international conference on maritime piracy, predicted that economic difficulties and a rise in crime could lead to an increase of piracy in countries like Panama and Venezuela.
Campoli said the attacks against smaller vessels make control and prevention more difficult. Endi
