Majority of Germans favor border controls: poll

Xinhua, September 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

A clear majority of Germans considered it good to reinstate checks at internal European Union (EU) borders, according to a poll released Friday by ZDF TV Politbarometer.

It has been two weeks since German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere announced that Germany would temporarily reinstate border controls after tens of thousands of refugees had entered the country.

The ZDF Politbarometer poll showed that 78 percent of Germans endorsed this measure, while only 19 percent considered it a bad idea.

Meanwhile, 63 percent of Germans think that the refugee crisis endangers the cohesion of the EU very strongly or strongly, up by 8.0 percentage points from two weeks ago, according to the poll result.

Fifty-seven percent of respondents think Germany could cope with the large number of refugees who currently come to Germany, while 40 percent do not believe that, ZDF said.

According to German Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel, up to a million refugees may arrive in Germany in 2015, a figure bigger than the earlier official estimates of 800,000 asylum applications. Endit
