Nigeria's ruling party lauds ECOWAS role in Burkina Faso crisis

Xinhua, September 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nigeria's ruling party -- All Progressives Congress (APC) -- has commended the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for its leadership role in restoring the transitional order in Burkina Faso after a week-long coup.

The party also hailed Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari for hosting a summit of ECOWAS state leaders that took the decision to reinstate Burkina Faso's Interim President Michel Kafando, who was ousted by his country's Presidential Guards.

The APC spokesperson Lai Mohammed said in a statement in Lagos on Friday that the move was a positive development for democracy, peace and stability in West Africa.

The regional bloc's insistence on strict adherence to the country's constitution and good governance which had zero tolerance for power obtained by unconstitutional means was commendable, the party said.

On September 16, soldiers led by Gen. Gilbert Diendere from the Presidential Security Regiment (RSP), a former presidential guard, arrested the transition president, his prime minister and members of the cabinet, and dissolved the government, before setting up the National Council for Democracy.

Anti-coup protests have left 10 people dead and 100 others injured. Endi
