Security under control despite alleged terrorist threat: Malaysian police

Malaysian police said that security in the capital is under control although that alleged terrorist threat was reported at some specific locations, according to a Friday report of Bernama, Malaysia's state news agency.

City Police Chief Tajuddin Md Isa made the remarks when commenting on a travel advisory issued by the U.S. Embassy and the Australian government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, advising their citizens to avoid Kuala Lumpur's Alor Street and the immediate surrounding areas on Thursday.

"Based on credible threat information regarding a potential terrorist act, the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur advises U.S. citizens to avoid Kuala Lumpur's Jalan Alor (Alor Street) and the immediate surrounding areas, on Thursday, September 24, 2015," the U.S. Embassy said on its website.

For all other locations, the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur reminds U.S. citizens of the need for caution and awareness of personal security, it added.

The Australian government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade also said that there is an ongoing threat of terrorism in Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur and other major cities. In 2015, Malaysian authorities have made a number of arrests of persons allegedly involved in planning attacks, including against entertainment venues in Kuala Lumpur, it added.

Regarding on these security advices, Tajuddin said that police view whatever advisory issued by the U.S. Embassy with regard to safety and security very seriously.

Police would investigate such claims and also meet the embassy to gather information, he added. Endi
