The prosecutors office in the northern Portuguese city of Porto has accused two people of deceiving around 230 people between 2012 and 2014 with false promises of employment abroad, and managing to garner around 22,000 euros (about 24,640 U.S. dollars) for visas.
According to the report, the accusation was made on Sept. 11, but was revealed on Wednesday. The defendants have been accused of 31 crimes.
Between December 2012 and January 2014, they "obtained gains by publishing false employment adverts abroad," in which they "proposed remuneration worth seven times the national minimum wage and the payment of expenses of food, housing and trips."
The report said the defendants convinced hopeful candidates to begin a supposed hiring process. The candidates then had to hand over their civil identification items and passport as well as a certain amount of money which they believed would go toward the payment of their visas to go abroad.
Most of the 230 hopefuls were unemployed. Endit
