Indonesia eyes development of peatland for more food supply

A senior official of the Indonesian agriculture ministry said here Wednesday that the ministry will use innovative technologies to build staple food plantations in the country's vast peatland areas, which are highly expected to become the nation's new food barn bases in the future.
The fertilizers and seeds that fit the high salinity level of peatland will be developed along with pest control technologies for such particular environment, said Muhammad Syakir, head of the ministry's agriculture research and development section.
Indonesian Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman said earlier that government would allocate some 32.9 trillion rupiah (about 2. 3 billion U.S. dollars) to increase production of seven kinds of staple food commodities - rice, corn, soybean, garlic, chili, meat and sugar. Endi
