The Geneva-based Global Fund will allocate 5.8 million euros (6.6 million U.S. dollars) over three years to help Bulgaria fight tuberculosis, officials said here Wednesday.

The Balkan country will receive the grant for improving the national tuberculosis program in accordance with a draft framework agreement approved by the Bulgarian government, the cabinet's press office said.

"The main objective of the program is to provide early detection of cases of resistant tuberculosis and early initiation of treatment, especially among patients from the most vulnerable groups with specific focus on the Roma community," the statement said.

The grant aims to support activities such as improving tuberculosis control in Bulgaria, and implementation of approaches oriented to treatment, care and prevention.

Bulgaria has registered a downward trend in morbidity and the spread of tuberculosis from 38 per 100,000 population in 2008 to 23.8 per 100,000 population in 2013, the government added. Endit
