Kenya to host Africa golf championship

Xinhua, September 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Host Kenya faces an uphill task as it seeks to stake its claim on the All Africa Golf Team Championship (AAGTC), which will be held in October, attracting 17 teams.

According to Kenya Golf Union (KGU) chairman Anthony Muhoro, it will cost about 120,000 U.S. dollars to successfully stage the tournament, which starts on Oct. 22-23 in Limuru Golf Club, on the outskirts of Nairobi.

The tournament, equivalent of football' s Africa Nations Cup, is held every two years and is the most important golf amateur team event on the continent.

The teams that have qualified are Uganda, Tanzania, Swaziland, South Africa, Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Cote d' Ivoire, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Egypt, Rwanda, Botswana, Namibia and Kenya.

"The tournament is big and will attract over 50 players. We have huge gaps in our budget and we are appealing to the corporate world to come and support us," Muhoro said Wednesday in Nairobi.

"This championship will showcase the very best of Africa' s men amateur golfers." Muhoro said Kenya has a strong team with experienced players.

"The selection of the team was through a qualifying round where all players were subjected to a 54-hole strokeplay event," he added.

This is the first time in history that Kenya will be hosting the AAGTC. The last event was hosted by Swaziland in 2013.

The event remains one of the most prestigious golf competitions in Africa. Each country is represented by four players and will play using the format of 72-hole strokeplay competition. Endi
