Sri Lankan investigators question former president over alleged state losses

Xinhua, September 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Sri Lankan investigators on Wednesday questioned former president Mahinda Rajapakse over losses incurred by state institutions during the presidential elections in January.

Rajapakse was questioned by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry at his residence in capital Colombo.

Investigators are probing a complaint alleging that a state media institution had incurred losses amounting to Rs.200 million (1.4 million U.S. dollars) due to broadcasting the former president's adverts without any payment during the election race earlier this year.

Rajapakse was defeated by President Maithripala Sirisena in the January presidential poll after 10 years in power.

The former president, his family and other senior officials from the previous government are all under probe in the island nation for corruption and fraud alleged to have taken place during their decade-long tenure in office. Endi
