Sri Lankan new gov't says to build more houses for war-affected civilians

Xinhua, September 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Sri Lankan government on Wednesday said it hoped to invite foreign and local investors to construct houses in the war-torn areas of the island nation for the families displaced by decades of conflict.

Cabinet Spokesperson Rajitha Senaratne told journalists in capital Colombo that the total housing requirement was 137,529 houses, which was above the 44,000 houses constructed within the Indian government's ongoing housing programs in Sri Lanka.

The Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC), an independent commission of inquiry which includes a mandate to promote national unity and reconciliation amongst all the communities, had strongly emphasized on the need to fulfill the shelter requirements in the conflict affected areas.

Thousands of civilians were left displaced by a 30-year civil war between government troops and Tamil Tiger rebels which ended in May 2009, with the government now hoping to prioritize its resettlement programs.

Senaratne said that the new government hoped to invite foreign and local investors to construct housing projects in the conflict affected north and east of the country in order to resettle the displaced families. End i
