Halep through, Petkovic out in WTA Guangzhou Open

Top-seeded Simona Halep went easily through by holding off Petra Martic in straight sets, while second seed Andrea Petkovic was eliminated by Monica Puig at the first round of WTA Guangzhou Open here on Tuesday.
Halep was broken twice but she converted three of five break points to clinch the first set by 6-4. She stormed five games in a row to win the second set 6-2.
Second-seeded Petkovic, however, was eliminated by the 21-year old rising star Monica Puig from Puerto Rico 6-1, 6-4.
No.3 seed Sara Errani beat Duan Ying-Ying, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, No.4 seed Jelena Jankovic overcame Elena Vesnina,7-6(3), 6-3, while Svetlana Kuznetsova and Monica Niculescu both advanced by three sets. Endi
