EU invests in 20 projects to boost secure, efficient online services

Xinhua, September 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Commission announced Tuesday that 20 projects would receive a total of 5.5 million euros (6.13 million U.S. dollars) from the EU to ensure better electronic identification (eID) services across Europe.

The selection followed a call for proposals under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program in the sector of telecommunications, said a press release.

The Commission believes EU funding would help member states with the roll-out of technical infrastructure to create interoperable, pan-European eID services.

It is hoped that there would be fewer burdens on citizens, public administrations and businesses, as they would be able to access efficient and secure online services.

With eID, many more activities could be done easily online without losing time and money.

Moreover, eID would also make e-commerce transactions safer.

Boosting trust in e-services and ensuring that different systems can "talk" to each other across borders are part of the Digital Single Market Strategy presented by the Commission in May, emphasized the press release. Endit
