Morocco's security services arrested six people related to a recently dismantled Islamic State-affiliated (IS) cell, local media reported Tuesday.
Citing a statement by the interior ministry, the daily Le Matin said that investigations revealed the arrested, who called their cell "Jund Al Khilafa in Morocco," the same name in Algeria which pledged allegiance to IS, were preparing to carry out terrorist operations in the Kingdom.
According to the source, the suspects attempted to prepare a remote detonation system though mobile phones, and were planning a suicide attack against one of the prisons of the Kingdom to release IS prisoners.
Moroccan police announced on Sept. 12 the dismantling of a five-member (IS) linked cell that planned a series of attacks on Moroccan soil.
They said that they seized a sizable quantity of weapons, including automatic guns, tear gas bombs, bladed weapons and an important quantity of ammunitions and suspicious products, noting that investigations revealed that these weapons were brought to the country via its eastern borders with Algeria.
Morocco has busted numerous IS-linked groups and arrested dozens of suspects. Endit
