Ugandan athletes Fred Musobo and Stella Chesang won gold medals at the 31st World Mountain Running Championships in Wales over the weekend.

The Federation official said Musubo triumphed in 49:00 over the 13km course in the men's category, while Chesang won the senior women's race of 8.9km in 37:52 on Saturday.

Musubo looked comfortable over a three-lap 13km on the undulating course. Italy's Bernard Dematteis grabbed the lead during the opening stages of the race in the first lap, but Musobo later took the lead around five km into the race and it remained so till the end.

Italy's Bernard Dematteis finally got his hands on a medal when he bagged a silver.

Ugandan teenager Chesang was in good form claiming top spot ahead of England's Emmie Collinge, Emma Clayton and Sarah Tunstall who finished second, third and fourth respectively.

Italy won the senior men's team competition, ahead of Uganda and Britain while Turkey won the junior men's with United States second and Britain third. Czech Republic came out winners in the junior women's team title.

"We shall keep exposing our athletes to several races around the world so that they can get better and better," said Ayikoru. Endit
