Nigeria to host ECOWAS summit on political crisis in Burkina Faso

Xinhua, September 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nigeria will on Tuesday in Abuja host a regional summit to discuss ways to solve the political crisis in Burkina Faso.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said in a statement reaching Xinhua Monday that current situation in Burkina Faso would top the Extraordinary Summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Buhari had condemned the coup d'etat in Burkina Faso and called for immediate restoration of civil transitional authority.

He urged the defense and security forces of Burkina Faso to keep faith with the agreed transitional program for the return of the country to constitutional rule after elections, which were due to be held in the country on Oct. 11.

Nigeria donated 20 pick-up vans to the National Electoral Commission of Burkina Faso toward successful conduct of the general elections.

Senegalese President Macky Sall and his counterpart from Benin Republic Boni Yayi visited Burkina Faso Friday to assess the prevailing situation following Thursday's coup by elements of the presidential guard under the leadership of Gen. Gilbert Diendere.

Sall is the current chairman of the ECOWAS while Yayi is the facilitator of the Burkina Faso dialogue. Endit
