Myanmar opposition party begins radio, TV campaigning for general election

Myanmar's opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD) began it radio and TV electoral campaigning on Monday night for the upcoming general election on Nov. 8.
Aung San Suu Kyi, Chairperson of NLD, addressed the nation the party's policy, political stance and objectives and called on the country's people in her canvass speech to decisively vote for the party in the November election to enable it to take the responsibility of a government.
If such responsibility is entrusted, the party would strive for the development of a democratic union with efforts to be made for national reconciliation, compatibility, removal of grudge and work together with any organization, she maintained.
On domestic peace process, Suu Kyi called for cautious and non- hasty coordination in ceasefire talks but prompt implementation of the results produced from the talks along with constitution amendment, in which she said the military plays a key role.
Although there may be some differences between the party and the military with the amendment issue, but there is identical desire with no disagreement on development of a democratic federal union, she believed.
She urged for respecting the result yielded from the coming election and removing doubt between the party and the military and cooperating with mutual trust for the affairs of union and democracy.
Days before Suu Kyi's TV campaign, the NLD issued a declaration with regard to the upcoming 2015 general election, presenting the party's aims to work for the change of the social status of the people in four sectors -- ethnic affairs and domestic peace, establishment of a constitution that guarantees security in livelihood, establishment of an administrative system that protects the people and free and secured development.
Radio and TV campaigning began on Sept. 8 and is allowed for twice for each political party on rotary basis until Nov. 6, two days before the planned election kicks off.
According to the Union Election Commission's latest figures, a total of 6,074 qualified candidates will run the upcoming general election in 1,171 constituencies nationwide in Myanmar.
Of the 5,764 political party candidates, the NLD, along with the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), tops the number of candidates with 1,130 each. Endi
