Shelling kill 18 in Syria's Aleppo: monitor

Xinhua, September 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 18 people were killed and tens of others either injured or missing on Monday, when Syrian forces fired missiles into a rebel-held district of northern city of Aleppo, a monitor group reported.

The missile fire targeted al-Sha'ar neighborhood in Aleppo, and was followed by ground shelling, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The UK-based watchdog group said the rescue missions are still trying to save people who are struck under the rubble. It added that the death toll will likely rise due to the large number of critically wounded people.

Other activists have placed the death toll in al-Sha'ar at 30.

The state-run media made no mention of the shelling on al-Sha'ar, but the attack came just a day after rebels' shelling against government-controlled areas in Aleppo, leaving at least 14 people killed and 25 others wounded.

Aleppo, Syria's second largest city and once an economic hub, has become carved out between Syrian government in the west part and rebels in the east. Endit
