Burkina Faso journalists condemn attacks against media

Xinhua, September 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

Burkina Faso journalists' unions on Sunday strongly condemned brutal attacks perpetrated against the country's media organizations and journalists by putschists.

"We have witnessed unprecedented violation of media freedom and freedom of assembly perpetrated by the National Council for Democracy (CND) that was set up by those who organized the Sept. 16 coup," the unions said in a statement.

At least five journalists have been physically attacked while carrying out their duties, while several media houses have been visited by soldiers who asked them to halt all operations.

In their statement, the trade unions warned the putschists against attacking the media, reminding them that any regime that attacks the media is capable of carrying out massive human rights violations and being dictatorial.

"As the international community starts holding talks with the CND leader, Gen. Gilbert Diendere, we urge them to push for the end to incessant attacks against the media," the unions explained.

"Never before in this country has such barbaric acts been committed against the media, even during the reign of Blaise Compaore, Diendere's master," the statement concluded. Enditem
