China hopes for smooth general election in Myanmar

Xinhua, September 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

China hopes for a smooth general election for Myanmar in November, Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan said on Monday.

"As a friendly neighbor of Myanmar, China supports Myanmar in pushing forward the domestic political and national reconciliation processes and holding a smooth and timely general election," Chang said.

Chang's comment came during a meeting with Soe Win, deputy commander-in-chief of Myanmar's defense services and commander-in-chief of the army, in Beijing.

Myanmar's upcoming general election, which Myanmar President U Thein Sein has highlighted as a very important step in the country's democratic transition, has been set for Nov. 8, and campaigning will run from Sept. 8 until Nov. 6.

During the meeting, Chang called on both sides to ensure a right direction for military-to-military relations, maintain tranquility on the border and advance the comprehensive strategic partnership.

Soe Win thanked China for its long-term support and assistance, saying his country is willing to enhance strategic communication and practical cooperation with Chinese armed forces to promote the steady development of bilateral military relations.

Soe Win and Sun Jianguo, deputy chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, held the second China-Myanmar strategic and security consultation earlier Monday. Endi
