Xinhua, September 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nine kabaddi players were killed and 15 others seriously injured in a road mishap in the eastern Indian state of Odisha late Saturday evening.

"The mishap happened when a mini-truck in which they were traveling fell off a bridge near Surapalli in the state's Sundargarh district," a senior police official said Sunday.

While nine players were killed on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of some are said to be serious, he said on condition of anonymity.

The players were all returning after playing a tournament in the neighboring Dhundigaon district when the accident happened.

State Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced a compensation of 1 lakh rupees (2,000 U.S. dollars) to the families of each victim.

A probe has been ordered into the accident, the official said. Endi
