Xinhua, September 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Burundian health ministry Thursday declared a cholera outbreak in Mabayi health district in the country's northwestern Province of Cibitoke, on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo DR Congo).

"Cholera showed up in Mabayi on Sept. 6 with three suspected cases that had cholera symptoms," said Burundian Public Health and AIDS Control Minister Josiane Nijimbere in a declaration.

She indicated that on Sept. 7, the number of people with cholera-related symptoms in the affected villages rose to 27.

She called on people living in the area and neighboring localities to take hygiene measures to avoid the propagation of cholera.

The Burundian Imbo western lowlands extending from the north in Cibitoke province to the south in Makamba province near Lake Tanganyika are every year vulnerable to cholera. Endit
