Xinhua, September 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

U.S. new home starts fell in August, while building permits rose sharply in the month.

The U.S. Department of Commerce said on Thursday that U.S. privately-owned housing starts were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,126,000 in August, down 3 percent from the revised July figure but 16.6 percent higher than the year-ago level.

Single-family housing starts in August were at a rate of 739,000, 3 percent lower than the revised July figure.

Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits, a gauge of future construction, were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,170,000, rising 3.5 percent from the revised July rate.

U.S. home builders continue to report a positive outlook. The National Association of Home Builders' confidence index in September rose to its highest level since November 2005. Endit
