Danish police arrest 28 for cannabis trade

Xinhua, September 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Danish police arrested 28 people on Thursday morning in a major operation targeting the cannabis trade in Christiania, a self-proclaimed autonomous neighborhood here.

During the operation, the police seized two kg of cannabis, three pistols, and 875,000 Danish kroner (132,800 U.S. dollars), according to Copenhagen police.

The arrested will appear before a preliminary hearing at Copenhagen City Court on Thursday afternoon, where prosecutors will ask for them to be remanded in custody. The hearing itself is expected to take place behind closed doors.

The police did not disclose more information about the detainees.

Christiana, also known as Freetown Christiania, is a former hippie community in the heart of Copenhagen where the secret cannabis trade is rampant on Pusher Street.

Early this year, 76 people were sentenced to a combined 187 years and three months in what has been characterized as the country's largest ever cannabis case. Endit
