Belgium condemns coup attempt in Burkina Faso

Xinhua, September 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders and Minister of Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo condemned "in the strongest terms" the coup attempt in Burkina Faso, according to a statement published Thursday.

"These events threaten the democratic transition in Burkina Faso, which had fostered many hopes, as well as the path to the elections on Oct. 11," the statement said.

The two Belgian ministers called on all parties in Burkina Faso to put this country back on the path of legality, starting with the "immediate" release of President Michel Kafando, Prime Minister Isaac Zida and the other ministers detained.

The heads of the Belgian diplomacy invite the African Union, West African States Economic Community (ECOWAS) and the UN to remain seized of the situation and to take the necessary measures to restore legality.

Since May 2015, Burkina Faso is a new "partner" country for Belgian governmental cooperation, the statement said. As part of the preparation of cooperation between the two countries, a seminar for experts was held last week in Brussels. Endit
