A 46-year-old U.S. tourist has been allegedly drugged and then gangraped in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, a senior police official said Thursday.

"The incident took place late Monday night when the woman was returning to her hotel room after having dinner at an eatery in the state's Dharamsala town," he said, on condition of anonymity.

According to the official, the U.S. tourist has claimed that she fell unconscious after someone grabbed and drugged her on the way to the hotel.

"When she gained consciousness, the woman, who hails from California and was on her first visit to India, realized that she had been gangraped," he said.

A case of gangrape has been lodged and a manhunt lodged to nab the culprits, the official added. Endi
