DR Congo opposition urges Joseph Kabila to respect Constitution

Xinhua, September 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

Several opposition parties in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) on Tuesday organized a big public rally to denounce attempts by President Joseph Kabila to extend his term in office.

Meeting in the capital Kinshasa, the opposition leaders who were accompanied by thousands of their supporters, urged the president to organize elections within the period stipulated by the Constitution.

"There will not be any dialogue with the ruling party over elections," said Vital Kamerhe, one of the opposition leaders and a former Speaker of Parliament.

"We expect Kabila to carry out his responsibilities, if not, we shall ask the people to act in accordance with article 64 of the Constitution," he added.

Opposition members and some political analysts have expressed fear that Kabila plans to remain in power beyond the end of his term on Nov. 30, 2016.

Last week, DR Congo's prime minister said the country did not have the means to organize gubernatorial elections.

On Monday, seven political parties allied to the ruling party wrote an open letter to Kabila, urging him to respect the Constitution with regards to constitutional term limits. Enditem
