Pro-gov't rally launched in Malaysian capital

Xinhua, September 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

Thousands of ethnic Malays in red shirts rallied here on Wednesday to support Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak's government.

In response to the Bersih 4, a protest staged here by the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections or Bersih last month, the rally was organized by Malay rights NGOs to uphold Malay dignity and show their support for the government.

The Malaysian police have beefed up the city's security ahead of the rally. Some shops and businesses were shuttered before the rally due to security concerns.

Water cannons were fired at the crowd by the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) at Petaling Street, the city's Chinatown, as the crowd of protesters turned unruly there. Endi
