Five Chinese nurses were awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal on Tuesday for outstanding contributions to health care.

Vice President Li Yuanchao presented the medals at a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The Chinese winners were Du Liqun from Guangxi; Song Jing from Henan; Xing Caixia from Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region; Zhao Qinghua from Chongqing Municipality; and Wang Xinhua from the 302 Military Hospital.h A total of 36 nurses from 18 countries won the accolade this year.

The Florence Nightingale Medal, introduced in 1912, is the highest international honor for nurses. A total of 73 Chinese nurses have won the award since the country began to recommend candidates in 1983.

The award's namesake was a British nurse known for her pioneering work with soldiers during the Crimean War (1853-1856).

At the ceremony, Chinese State Councilor Wang Yong called on nurses and Red Cross Society of China staff to follow the example of the winners, and continue to contribute to health care development. Endi
