Xinhua, September 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

The first Confucius Classroom in Bulgaria was opened in the 18th Comprehensive School here on Tuesday, the first day of the new school year in the Balkan country.

"This event is very important for us because over the next two months, five more Confucius Classrooms will be opened in five schools in five Bulgarian towns," Prof. Ge Zhiqiang, Chinese director of the Confucius Institute in Sofia, said at the opening ceremony.

The opening of this Confucius Classroom created a good platform for further Chinese language training in Bulgaria, Ge said at the ceremony attended by Bulgarian Vice President Margarita Popova.

In turn, Velichka Stoycheva, director of the 18th Comprehensive School, the first Bulgarian school to begin Chinese language teaching in 1992, thanked the Chinese Embassy in Sofia and the Chinese government for their cooperation and tireless support for the study and the expansion of Chinese language in Bulgaria.

Stoycheva's school has contributed to the promotion of the study of Chinese language in other schools in Bulgaria, she said.

Over the past three years, Chinese language teaching has become increasingly popular in the Balkan country. According to recent data from the Chinese Embassy in Sofia, nearly 2,000 children are studying the Chinese language in some 20 schools in Bulgaria. Endit
