Myanmar's parliament speaker calls for active participation in election

Myanmar's parliament speaker U Shwe Mann Tuesday stressed active participation in the upcoming general election set for Nov. 8, calling on eligible voters to cast vote with responsibility and awareness to bring about success of the election.
U Shwe Mann made the remarks at a ceremony marking the International Democracy Day at the parliament building in Nay Pyi Taw under the theme of "Public Participation for Democracy."
Emphasizing on the importance of stability and tranquility, rule of law and socio-security of the country, he called for balanced and correct exercising of the state sovereignty in terms of legislative, executive and judiciary power.
Myanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi stressed at the ceremony peaceful holding of the upcoming general election in a free and fair manner, calling for implementation of people's desire produced from the election.
The extent of the success of the 2015 general election would gauge how far the country's democratic reform reaches and how much the essence to be obtained, said Suu Kyi, who is chairperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD).
In his message on the occasion of the International Democracy Day, President U Thein Sein said Myanmar government will make all its efforts to ensure that the upcoming 2015 general election will be free and fair.
"Currently, Myanmar is at an important juncture where Myanmar people hold in their hand the opportunity to realize the aspirations of the people and their future," U Thein Sein pointed out in his message, stressing that the election is one of the huge tasks for transitioning Myanmar towards democracy.
The voters, on their part, also bear responsibilities and duties to ensure the creation of a new democratic state of the future with their votes, he emphasized.
Calling for casting votes to elect right representatives, U Thein Sein, however, warned against causing disruption to those harmonious communities and wide diversity of belief while canvassing votes for their candidates.
Speaker of the House of Nationalities (Upper House) U Khin Aung Myint also sent his message on the occasion.
At the ceremony, paper reading sessions by 20 political parties and some civil organizations were attached.
Myanmar has joined in marking the international event annually since 2011 and the present one is the fifth occasion. Endi
