Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held talks with visiting general secretary of Vietnam's ruling Communist Party Nguyen Phu Trong in Tokyo on Tuesday, reaffirming their determination to strengthen cooperation in economic and security areas.

According to a joint statement released after the summit meeting, Japan pledges to provide more vessels to Vietnam and the two sides signed a Memorandum on cooperation between Coast Guard Agencies.

On economic relations, Japan affirmed its commitment to enhance cooperation with Vietnam, including offer 286 million yen (2.38 million U.S. dollars) official development assistance (ODA) to help the latter build new general hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam.

Vietnam will open its market to Japanese apples, while Vietnamese mangoes will enter Japanese markets soon, the statement said.

It is Trong's first official visit to Japan since he took power in 2011. He will also hold talks with Japanese Emperor and other politicians during his four-day visit. Endi
